アラスカの上空で｜Over the sky on Araska
ふとした事から、アラスカのアンカレッジ空港に、突然、降り立った事があります。 成田へ向かう飛行機の中、緊迫した雰囲気で、英語のアナウンスが聞こえてくる。 いわゆる、映画などで見るシーン。 「どなたかお医者様はいらっしゃいませんか！？」 急病の患者さんが出てしまったようだ。 飛行機はアトランタを出発しておよそ、4時間程。成田までは、まだ先は長い。 アラスカ上空を通過して2時間ほど経った所だろうか。 機内は緊迫した空気の中、私の席からは見えない所で、お医者さんが、患者さんの容態を診ているようだ。

30分程経った頃だろうか、再びアナウンスが入り、急病患者を一刻も早く病院に連れて行く為に、一番近くである、アラスカのアンカレッジ空港へ戻ります。 と。機内は静かなどよめきが起きる。 着陸し、1時間、乗客への指示はなく、機内に待機する。病人は運び出され無事に病院に向ったのだろうが、それも一切詳細は告げられないまま、、 突然陽気な金髪の制服を着た男性が現れると、「君たちは、大変ラッキーだ！今日はアラスカに泊まれるぞ！」

まだ9月の終わりだったと思うが、夕方になると薄着ではかなり寒い。冷戦に終止符が打たれて以降、かつての賑わいを失ったアンカレッジに人気はない。海の向こうには氷が浮かび、駐車場にはプロペラ機が沢山止められている。 連れて来られたホテルは広く高級だった。 東京の職場に電話をする。「今、アラスカなのですが、帰国が遅れます。」信じてもらえず、電話を切られる。 同じ境遇では人々は連帯感をもち、豪華なディナーにも安堵感を得る。 明日はみんなで、成田だ。 寝る前に、何人かで寄ったホテルのバーで飲んだ「アラスカ」の味をふと思い出す時がある。
